The AuthorAngelika Mechtel was born in Dresden in 1943, but her family fled to West Germany in 1945. She married at an early age and had two daughters, and held a variety of jobs to support her family. Some of her poems and short stories began to appear in various newspapers in the late 1950s, later followed by novels. Angelika Mechtel began writing children's books in 1975, and her writing has won several prizes. Beginning in the 1980s, she was an active member of the literary fellowship society PEN, and traveled around the world with her partner, author Gerd E. Hoffman. Angelika Mechtel was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and died in February 2000 in Cologne.
